DECISION GUIDE

Restaurant displays: menus and promotions

The menu should help people decide before reaching the counter.

Operating conditions

DIRECT ANSWER

Organize a digital menu around how customers choose and order. Prioritize products, prices and availability; separate promotions from essential information. Check readability from the queue, daypart changes and removal of sold-out items from the displayed menu. Assign an owner for current content and prepare an alternative if the display stops working.

Design from the queue

Observe where decisions happen and what obscures the display when the restaurant is busy. Keep essential information visible for long enough; if customers wait for a slide to return, the loop is interfering with the task. Test a simple version before adding animation or multiple zones.

Availability needs an owner

Define who updates prices, removes sold-out items and checks each shift. If you connect the CMS to another system, validate the integration and its behavior offline; do not assume synchronization just because a data input exists. For food information, use the restaurant’s checked ingredient and allergen records and review process rather than improvising in a template.

Maintenance while the venue is open

Review access, cabling, heat and cleaning at the proposed location. Avoid a replacement requiring the entire service area to close. Ask the installer and manufacturer to document cleaning and environmental conditions. Keep an up-to-date alternative menu and rehearse how staff activate it during an incident.

Action checklist

  • Test from the far end of the queue.
  • Keep essentials visible.
  • Assign price and availability updates.
  • Test daypart transitions.
  • Keep a current alternative menu.

Document the result of each action and assign an owner for what remains pending.

Common questions

Should the entire menu move?

No. Use motion only when it helps and does not hide information the customer needs to read.

Does the screen replace menu review?

No. Content still needs an approved source and an owner.
